Summer Term 2 Newsletter: July 20144 minute read

Dear parents/carers,

As the summer holidays are here we send our love and best wishes to all the children in Year 6 who are leaving Gomersal St. Mary’s. We wish them every success at their next school. We are also saying goodbye to Mrs Adams and Miss Trim. We wish them good luck in their new posts! Mrs Lee is taking her maternity leave and our warmest wishes go with her.

Miss Jane Barker is taking up the post as acting Head Teacher. She has visited the school several times to meet with myself and other staff members to ensure she is well prepared to take on her role in September. I wish her the very best!

Sports Day/Fun Afternoon

I would like to thank parents for the tremendous support you gave on Sports Day. The rain held off and it was very well attended by parents and friends. The £620 profit will go towards providing extra resources for your children. So thank you for attending these events. Photos from this event can be seen here and here!

Summer Evening Concert

The ‘party in the park’ was a very pleasant evening with both the children and parents really enjoying themselves. The children sang beautifully and moved me to tears as they surprised me by singing on of my favourite songs! The SMASH barbecue was a sell out and the ice cream man never stopped all evening. SMASH raised approximately £280! Once again, thank you for making the evening a great success.

Forget Me Not Trust

Representatives from the Trust came to school to receive a cheque for £600 which the school raised through the sponsored events held in school. This is a very worthwhile cause and I am so glad we can help them. Photos from their visit can be seen here.

School Meals

As from September 1st, the price of a school meal will be £1.90 per day. The price of a meal has been unchanged for 2 years. The cost per week is £9.50. Also from September, we are offering a  4 week school menu to add more variety for the children. These will be displayed on the Kirklees School Meals website from September. From September, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school lunch each day. However, if you are entitled to free school meal due to your financial situation you  will still need to apply as normal. Milk price remains at £9.50 for the term.

Our attendance figures have gradually crept up again over the year ending with a whole school average of 96.12% compared to 95.7% last year. Our attendance is now graded as ‘outstanding’. The class with the best attendance for the year is Class 2!

This year there are 40 children with 100% attendance over this year and a further 25 children with 99%. They have each received their own cup or medal. Well done everyone!

Early Years Canopy

We are having a canopy fitted over the summer to enable the children in Nursery and  Reception classes to have more access to the outdoor area.

PE Kit

All children must bring a full PE kit to school. It is best to bring it each Monday and leave it in school until Friday. The PE kit must consist of:

  • A white t-shirt and a pair of navy shorts
  • A pair of trainers/pumps for outdoor PE
  • A dark coloured tracksuit for outdoor games.

Children must not bring ‘beach type’ clothes as they will not be allowed to wear them.

School Uniform

A uniform list is available here. Please ensure your child has a full uniform that is clearly labelled with your child’s name. Labels can be bought online from here. The only approved stockists for our school are Sports FX in Cleckheaton.

The other thing I must stress is the need for suitable school shoes. Shoes need to be black, flat and sturdy. Many fashion boots and shoes are not made for school floors and playgrounds. We want to reduce the number of accidents caused by inappropriate footwear.

Children are not allowed to wear earrings for PE. Please ensure they are removed, even small studs, before your child comes to school. If your child is having their ears pierced please do it the first week of the holidays to allow for them to heal and be removed in September.

The school reopens after the Summer holidays on Tuesday, 2nd September.

I would like to thank you for all your support over the last 10 years. I have loved being the Head Teacher at Gomersal St. Mary’s and I shall miss the children most of all.

I hope the bluebells I planted with them bloom next Spring and it may just remind them of the fun we have had together!

On behalf of all the staff, I hope you and your families have an enjoyable holiday and we see plenty of sunshine!

Best wishes, Mrs Scott.

Mr Pitts currently teaches Computing to the whole school along with some other subjects during teacher's PPA time. He runs this website and makes sure it all works smoothly, most of the time!
