Summer Term Newsletter4 minute read

Dear Parents/Carers,

As the summer holidays are here we send our love and best wishes to all the children in Year 6 who are leaving Gomersal St Mary’s. This is the first cohort of children to stay with us through to Year 6 and we have got quite attached to them! We wish them every success at their next school. We are also saying goodbye to Miss Priestley and Miss Mason. We wish them good luck in their new posts!

Ofsted inspection

We are really pleased with the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection! We managed to retain our ‘Good’ judgement in all areas of our work in school. Ofsted keep raising the bar and so many schools are failing to reach a good standard. Thank you to everyone for their support.

Sports Day/Fun Afternoon

I would like to thank parents for the tremendous support you gave on Sports Day. I think the Parent’s races were especially popular! Start training for next year! The sun shone and it was very well attended by parents and friends. The £927 profit will go towards providing extra resources for your children.

So thank you for attending these events.

Summer Evening Concert

The ‘party in the park’ was a very pleasant evening with both the children and parents really enjoying themselves. The children sang and danced very well. SMASH produced some fantastic burgers and the evening was a great success!

Nursery sessions

I would like to thank you for returning the recent questionnaire asking for your views regarding the changes to session times. Overall the response was in favour to change to the new times. So starting in September the Nursery sessions will be as follows:

Morning Nursery: 8.30-11.30am

Afternoon Nursery: 12.15-3.15pm

Morning Nursery children can still come to our Early Bird’s Breakfast Club at 8.10am and will be taken across to the Nursery at 8.30am. The Nursery afternoon children can be collected from 3pm if you so wish. I suggest that you collect your child from school first and then collect from the Nursery. Parents will need to use the Nursery path and will not be able to cut through the Early Year’s outdoor play area.

Water Bottles

As from 1st September we are no longer providing water bottles for the children. Some parents already provide a water bottle for their child and after lots of discussion we have decided that we will do this for everyone. So each day your child needs to bring a bottle already filled with water to drink throughout the day. They are able to refill from water coolers at lunchtime if needed.

School meals

As from September 1st the price of a school meal will be £1.90 per day. The price of a meal has been unchanged for 2 years. The cost per week is £9.50. Also from September we are offering a choice of menu each day. Your child will be able to select one meal or the other. They will not be able to pick and choose between the choices e.g. potatoes from one choice and pasta from another. This will ensure each child has a healthy, balanced meal each day. I have worked with catering services to plan the new menus. These will be displayed on Kirklees School Meals website from September.

Our attendance figures have gradually crept up over the year ending with a whole school average of 95.7%.

The Class with the best attendance for the year is Class 1!

This year there are 10 children with 100% attendance over the year and a further 13 children with 99%. They will receive their own cup or medal. Well done everyone!

All children must bring a full PE kit to school. It is best to bring it each Monday and leave it in school until Friday. The PE kit must consist of :-

  • A white t-shirt and a pair of navy shorts
  • A pair of trainers/pumps for outdoor PE
  • A dark coloured tracksuit for outdoor games.
  • Children must not bring ‘beach type’ clothes as they will not be allowed to wear them.

School uniform

A uniform list is on our website. Please ensure your child has a full uniform that is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

The only approved stockists for our school are Sports FX in Cleckheaton. The other thing I must stress is the need for suitable school shoes. Shoes need to be black, flat and sturdy. Many fashion boots and shoes are not for school floors and playgrounds. We want to reduce the number of accidents caused by inappropriate footwear.

Children are not allowed to wear earrings for PE. Please ensure they are removed, even small studs, before your child comes to school. If your child is having their ears pierced please do it in the first week of the holidays to allow for them to heal and be removed in September.

  • The school re-opens after the Summer holidays on Tuesday 3rd September.

On behalf of all the staff I hope you and your families have an enjoyable holiday and we see plenty of sunshine!
