Summer Term 1 Newsletter4 minute read

It has been another busy half term. This is the first year that we have taken the statutory SATs tests at the end of Year 6. The children have been working hard and the SATs tests are complete along with the Optional SATs taken by all year 3, 4 and 5 children. Year 2 children will take their SATs in the first week back after the Spring Bank holiday. The children have worked hard but they have also had fun when we organised a Circusology day; learning new skills and tricks! (Photos of the event are available here)

School visits

Visits are planned for next half term and are as follows:

  • Reception: Cannon Hall Farm
  • Years 1 and 2: Magna
  • Year 3: Harewood House
  • Year 4: Oakwell Hall
  • Year 5: Red House Museum
  • Year 6: Hepworth Art Gallery/Chantry Chapel, Wakefield

There is also the weekend residential for children in years 5 & 6 to Condover Hall, Shropshire.

Walk the Plank fashion show

Thank you to all the parents and friends that came to watch the fashion show hosted by Year 1 children. It was a great success with both children and parents enjoying themselves! The aim of the show was to raise funds for the ‘Forget Me Not’ trust; a charity that supports families with poorly children. However, as part of the process of producing the show, the children had opportunities to practice the important skills of co-operation, enterprise and teamwork. They raised a grand total of £66.50. There is a short video clip available here or on the Spenborough Guardian website. It is worth a look!

Netball Team Success!

Our school netball team has been playing in inter-school matches with schools in our Primary Partnership. Although only recently formed, they won their first match last week! The match was against Whitechapel Primary and the score was 7-1! Mrs Colling and Mrs Kennedy who were supporting the children were thrilled and extremely proud of the team’s achievement. Well done team!

Once again I am asking parents to consider the safety of all our children when parking outside the school. The Governors are very concerned about the number of parents parking in places that compromise children’s safety. We are working with the Police and Highways to extend the zig-zag lines, put in double yellow lines and to monitor parents parking illegally by frequent monitoring visits and the use of a ‘camera van’. Also, remember to consider our neighbours when parking; please do not block driveways.

School Meals

The cost of a school lunch will increase to £1.90 from September. The cost has stayed the same for 2 years. We are offering a choice of meal, starting after the holiday. A separate letter with trial menus have already been sent to parents and will be placed on the website shortly. The children will be able to give their opinions on the new menu and it will be finalised for September. As we have to order food in advance, we need 2 weeks notice if your child wishes to change from a packed lunch to a school lunch.

May I remind you that once the children are handed over to their parents at 3pm they are under your supervision and care. A few children continue to climb on the Gazebo and on fences despite requests from staff to stop. This is very dangerous. Please ensure your child is safe.

PE kits

All children need a PE kit for indoor and outdoor PE. Your child also needs a pair of trainers or pumps for outdoor activities and a pair of jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt (plain navy/dark coloured – not holiday clothes). It is important to have the correct kit and to ensure it is left in school all week. PE is a statutory subject in the National Curriculum and children need to take part in every lesson just as they do for English or Maths.

You can register your child for Nursery from birth! Please see Mrs Earnshaw in the office for more information.

The children have worked really hard on their SATs and they need a good rest. So let’s hope we get some summer weather so we can all enjoy the holiday before we return to school ready for another busy and productive half term!
